Ben Kaika (Bass), Paddy Beach (drums) and Reno Tehei (guitar) were members of "Sounds Unlimited" who travelled to England on the Ship RHMS Ellinis in 1967. While there they saw Jimi Hendrix playing at the Marquee. By the end of the return voyage Reno had the Hendrix style perfected. They then formed a 3 piece group "Joyful Cry" playing at the Psychedelic Id Coffee Bar in Courtney place. This lasted a few months but when Malcolm Hayman was forming the Quincy Conserve they decided to join as they were making no money at the coffee bar.

Ross Burgess (Friend) during the 1960`s was a regular attendee at the "Downtown club" Wellington which was owned and run by Roy Young.... Ross remembered that Paddy Beach drummer had previously been in the Soundells ( his vocal on "Will you still love me tomorrow" comes to mind.) They had several practises with Hayman`s "Quincy Conserve" but then entrepreneur Mike Browning came over from Australia, having heard about Joyful Cry, and persuaded them to go to Australia with their Hendrix act, where they became known as "Compulsion". Ross drove Reno and Paddy to Palmerston to buy a left-handed Stratocaster, so that Reno could play it upside down, as Hendrix was left-handed and played a right hand Strat upside down.

I think this history is worthy of note rather than the line that suggests that the Sounds unlimited rhythm section were not up to scratch for The Quincey Conserve. Reno was a superb guitarist, and Paddy and Ben were excellent players. Sadly Reno and Paddy are now deceased and I think you might add this information in their memory. Written by Ross Burgess
